Girls Junior Varsity Tennis, Girls Varsity Tennis · Girls’ Tennis triumphs over San Dimas HS

By CHARIS QI

STAFF WRITER

On Oct. 16, girls’ tennis triumphed over San Dimas HS with a score of 14-4.

This match marked the final home game of the season which led to a celebration for the graduating seniors.

Doubles player Amanda Chu (12) believes that senior night heightened the team spirit and caused this win to be more significant.

“Because San Dimas is one of the more competitive teams in our league, this victory was definitely even more memorable [for me] and the team spirit felt more passionate,” Chu said.

Not only did this win add to the team’s winning streak, but it also brought them closer to becoming undefeated league champions.

According to head coach Jerelyn Lopez, the team accomplished this  feat throughout the season due to the girls’ improvement in shots and techniques.

“[In my opinion], the players’ shots have become a lot more consistent and aggressive at the net since the beginning of the season, ” said Lopez. “Consistency with shots and effort helped us win this game.”

Likewise, the girls have high hopes for the oncoming California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and plan to practice many net plays, consistency drills, and offensive and defensive drills to increase stamina and technique.

Co-captain Arianna Audelo (9) set personal goals as well as goals for the team.

“For CIF individuals, I [plan] to [reach] at least quarter-finals,” Audelo said. “[However], for the team, I believe that we can get to finals [by practicing hard].”

The team will be competing in CIF Individuals Preliminaries in Claremont next Wednesday and Thursday.

Multiple Teams · Football succumbs to Rowland HS

By CHRISTINA QUACH
STAFF WRITER

On Oct. 6, the football team suffered a defeat against Rowland HS at the Homecoming game with a score of 21-28.

According to Coach Salvador Ortiz, poor performance contributed to the result of the game.

“The other team managed to execute [their game plays] better than us, resulting in the loss of our team,” Ortiz said. “Right now, our main focus is to carry out our game plays [more effectively] and have a stronger bond as a team so we can perform better at our next games.”

Captain Eric Castillo (12) says that the preparation for the Homecoming game is no different from the team’s usual practices.

“We prepared for the game as if it was [any other] game. We watched films of our opponents and did [our typical] drills,” Castillo said. “It was a close game. [The team] managed to keep the score close [up until] the last [couple] minutes of the game, when the other team performed better than us.”

According to Castillo, the team made major improvements throughout the year.

“Compared to last year, [the team] improved [drastically]. We have been [playing] better this year and it is nice [for both the new and old players] to see our improvements over the year.  [Despite the fact that] we lost, [I believe] that this game boosted our team’s morale, because of our [better turnout] this year,” Castillo said.

The next football game will be away at Baldwin Park HS on Oct. 13.

Multiple Teams · Cross Country attends invitational at Central Park

By VINCENT CORTES
STAFF WRITER

On Saturday, Oct. 7, Cross Country competed in the invitational race at Central Park in Huntington.

For the race, each team member was divided into categories (ex. varsity boys or sophomore girls) where they face off against other schools in their respective divisions. After the race, the school with the most runners in each category with the top 7 fastest times  is crowned the winner.

According to co-captain Julian Modesto (12), the team showed immense improvement during the race and their results made him appreciative.

“The race was an overall success. The team made me proud because [many of us] broke our personal records and [performed] better than last year.”

Additionally, Jonathan Pfeiffer (10)  overcame his challenges from last year and secured first place in the sophomore boys’ category.

“It felt very rewarding to reach my goal, because I practiced extremely hard before this invitational. I am proud of myself because last year I got third place, and this year I was able to get first,” Pfeiffer said.

For the remainder of the season, Dorsey expects her teammates to work harder.

“Every member has their own individual goals and as a team we want to go to CIF. In order to reach those goals, we will push ourselves everyday to our best [ability],” Dorsey said.

The next cross country will be at Bonelli Park, on Nov 1.
